3 Things Renters Forget on Move-In Day

Moving day is a whirlwind of excitement and chaos—with so many things to remember, it’s easy to overlook a few essential items. At Legacy Property Management, we’ve seen that even small forgotten items can cause big inconveniences during those first critical hours in a new rental. To help renters settle in smoothly, here are three surprisingly common essentials that many forget on move-in day—and some bonus tips to make your move hassle-free!

1. Toilet Paper

It sounds simple, but toilet paper is one of the most often forgotten items when moving in! New tenants sometimes assume it's provided—and arriving with an empty roll can turn into an awkward emergency. Before moving day, make sure to grab at least a couple of rolls so you’re prepared from the start.

2. Shower Curtain

Many rental bathrooms don’t come with a shower curtain or rod installed, and without one, showering can be a messy ordeal. Don’t forget to pack a shower curtain and hooks (or a tension rod) to keep the water where it belongs. It’s one of those essentials that takes just a moment to install but makes a big difference.

3. Lightbulbs

Most landlords do not supply lightbulbs, meaning your new place could be dim or dark when you move in. Bring some replacement bulbs that fit your fixtures so you can brighten up your new home right away. LED bulbs are energy-efficient and long-lasting—perfect for new renters settling in.

Bonus Moving Day Tips:

  • Pack a “First Night” Essentials Box: Include toiletries, a change of clothes, chargers, snacks, and basic kitchenware to avoid unpacking chaos.

  • Label Boxes by Room: This simple step helps movers and yourself unpack efficiently and reduces stress.

  • Confirm Utilities: Make sure utilities like water, electricity, and internet are set up ahead of time so everything works seamlessly on day one.

Moving can be overwhelming, but a little preparation goes a long way in making your new place feel like home from the moment you step through the door. For more renter tips and helpful checklists, visit Legacy Property Management’s Tenant Education resources.
